Edmonton principal identified as a man killed in a Sicamous Creek fall


Global News has learned that Dave Kowalchuk, principal of Edmonton Public School, has died the man who died after falling from the edge of a cave near Sicamous Creek Falls.

On its website, Caernarvon School lists Dave Kowalchuk as principal. He lived in Sherwood Park.

In a statement, the Edmonton Superintendent of Public Schools said:

"Our thoughts and condolences go to Dave Kowalchuk's family as they face this terrible tragedy," Darrel Robertson.

“Dave will be remembered by all of us at Edmonton Public Schools as a passionate educator and leader who has brought a love of learning to school every day.

"He will be greatly missed by every student and member who has had the pleasure of working with him."

Search and rescue crews to attempt bodily healing of a fallen migrant near Sicamous

Sicamous RCMP said the 53-year-old hiker was running out of the marked lane and fell Monday at around 12 o'clock.

The entire Sicamous Creek Trail system has been closed while the area is being assessed and the survey is ongoing.

Members with Shuswap Search and Rescue assisted with the recovery of the body, due to the steep, rugged terrain.

"This investigation is ongoing, but at the present time it appears to be a tragic accident," Sgt. Murray McNeil said on Tuesday.

Kowalchuk's death is the second time in three months that someone suffered a deadly fall from the area over the waterfall.
