A 60-year-old man, Riverside, died from complications from the flu – the first documented flu death in Riverside County in the current flu season.

"This is a tragic reminder that the flu still kills," said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, provincial health officer. "We continue to recommend to the community to receive their flu flow."

According to the Department of Public Health and Health Surveillance expert Barbara Cole, there were 23 flu-related deaths involving 64 or younger residents during the influenza season 2017-18. According to her, the last victim received a flu vaccine and died after being hospitalized. An existing health disorder could worsen his condition, officials said.

During a performance last month before the Guardian Council, Kaiser stressed the need for vaccines by referring to the 100-year 1918 flu pandemic, when the so-called "Spanish flu" raged on several continents. Nearly 700,000 people died in the United States as a result of the US health pandemic, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were about 500 million infections worldwide, resulting in about 50 million deaths.

Kaiser admitted that last season's flu vaccinations proved to be only 40 percent effective against viral strains that spread throughout the county and state. However, even at a lower level of protection, "you're still 40% less likely to get the flu, and even if you get it, it's usually less severe," he said.

Flu is a respiratory disease marked by fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, headaches and body. Vomiting and diarrhea are also known.

According to Cole, handwashing and "social exclusion" – avoiding someone exhibiting symptoms – are the best ways to avoid the flu, transmitted through droplets from a cough or sneezing.

People who fight infections should minimize contact with others until their symptoms, she said.

Flu shots are available at the University of Riverside Medical Center in Moreno Valley, at each of the county's 10 health clinics, as well as most pharmacies and doctors' offices.

The flu season usually extends from early autumn to early spring.
