Life like Neanderthals was not a picnic, but a new analysis says it was no more dangerous than what our species faced in ancient times.
The study challenges the common view that our evolutionary cousins lived a particularly dangerous life. It was released on Wednesday by the journal Nature.
Neanderthal life was probably more dangerous than what people are currently facing in industrialized countries. But researchers say it makes more sense to compare Neanderthals to our species in ancient times. So both groups faced similar environments and lifestyles.
The researchers reviewed fossil studies to examine the rates of skull injury. They found the same class in Neanderthals as in old friends in our species.
