Fox News has revealed that today, July 31, the rare occurrence occurred for the Earth's natural satellite – a phenomenon known as the Black Moon.

This is a fairly rare all-around event that will take place in North America today, and it will mark the first occasion since 2016.

The rest of the planet will see the Black Moon on August 30th.

What is the Black Moon?

Fox News writes that although there is no single definition of a Black Moon, "by the time and date, it is most often used to represent the second new moon of the month."

The online publication goes on to say that "This rarely happens outside of the acting years, because lunar cycles mostly take 29 days to complete. But each 32 months ago, there are two full moons in a month, and the first is known as the Blue Moon."

New moons are not visible as they travel "through the sky with the Sun during the day," according to, quoted by FoxNews.

The gravitational influence of the new moon and sun

The website also notes this: "But the gravitational influence of the new moon and sun is physically compounding on our water planet, which people along the coastal shores may notice in the coming days."

Other Black Moon meanings have been reported to include a third New Moon in a season of four New Moons. There is no New Moon in February and no full moon.

Today's Black Moon is also a supermoon, and that means the New Moon is happening at the closest point to our planet in its monthly orbit.
