At the time the veil was unveiled, "Hongmeng" caused 5,000 people in the Dongguan basketball court to be collectively ignited, and the audience applauded. This is the site of a development conference held by Huawei at Songshan Lake in Dongguan and the new bazaar of 20,000 employees of Huawei.
This year's development conference is also the largest conference held by Huawei after it was listed by the United States. The outside world has locked its attention to Huawei's status after a series of events: foreign cellphone sales, backup channel backups and of course the "Hongmeng" system it wants to cover.
It is not too much to describe the conference with great attention. It was only the main place in the afternoon of the 9th, and the number of participants reached 5,000. Huawei Consumer Business (CBG) executives Yu Chengdong, Wang Chenglu, Zhang Pingan and Shao Yang attended the event. Huawei has not let everyone fall apart. After several times of preparation, Huawei's general manager, consumer company Yu Chengdong, has announced that the "Harmony OS" system is officially unveiled.
According to Yu Chengdong, "Hongmeng" has the following characteristics:
1. Distributed operating system based on micro-core and full scenario. (The specific meaning will be explained below)
2, facing the "next generation" IOT scenario, including a released glorious smart screen, the planned computer, a bracelet, a car, a speaker, a headset, VR equipment, the future will extend to industrial, airspace and so on. Field

It is worth mentioning that mobile phones, as the major category of Huawei handsets for consumers, did not appear in the "Hong Meng" landing plan announced by Yu Chengdong.the
As to why Huawei is converging on the Hongmeng border, Yu Chengdong has shown an open stance in the meeting. He said frankly: "For environmental reasons, we prefer to use Google's Android operating system."
However, after interviewing 36 氪 and other media interviews, Yu Chengdong also stressed that if the current international situation continues, "Huawei can upgrade all mobile phones to Hongmen at night, we are always ready."
It can be said, whether it's Yu Chengdong's remarks or the full IoT product line that Huawei CBG executives featured at the press conference, they are all sending a signal to the outside world: (with US companies) it's a combination, and Huawei has countermeasures.
In the media packet interview of this year's Huawei Developers conference, there are a bunch of pictures of Soviet fighters that Ren Zhengfei once showed, He used this warrior to describe today's Huawei: In history, this warrior did not crash , but returned successfully due to core zero. The component tank and engine were not affected. Photo: Su Jianxun
Huawei has been through the most difficult period.Ever since the US Department of Commerce was listed in May, Huawei has been unable to obtain software and devices and products and services from US companies Huawei immediately implemented a series of measures: supply chain links and enabling the "prepared tire program" to solve the core provisioning problem. components; overseas markets. , in the United States, Germany and Singapore and other countries to conduct marketing activities, has promised that if the Google application ceases to operate within two years of purchase, it will provide full refund to customers.
On the most affected system services, Yu Chengdong also frankly said that due to the disconnection of Google GMS Android system, there is indeed a shortage in the consumer company based on Huawei mobile phones. However with the acceleration of "Hongmeng", the vulnerability was now Is almost the same. "
"The overseas market has now regained more than 80%. This year, mobile phones are estimated to have around 240 million copies. It's not a big deal to stabilize the world." Yu Chengdong told the media including 36 氪.
What makes Yu Chengdong an action of Huawei's plight. At the end of July, Huawei announced data on the half-year report: In the first half of 2019, Huawei posted revenue of 401.3 billion yuan, a year-over-year increase of 23.2%, significantly higher than the growth rate of 15% in the year. same period as the previous two years. The net profit margin was 8.7% and the net profit was 34.9 billion yuan.
1. What is Hongmeng?
As Yu Chengdong's speech progressed, many viewers' surprises were gradually replaced by doubts. Micro-kernel, distributed, multi-programming language … What exactly is Hongmeng?
"In the opinion of IoT vendors, these are the outdated terms, but once Huawei offers it, it will get more attention from the public." Mi Xue, the founder of IoT solution provider "Small Arts," told 36 氪. .
Michelon further explained to 36 that "kernel" refers to the core architecture of the operating system, which can be roughly divided into "macro-kernel" and "micro-kernel". The first represents iOS and Android, and the second represents Google. Fuchsia and Hong Meng. The difference between the two is that the smaller the core, the less is an operation code and the simpler the process.
The interference of macro-cores and micro-cores is also related to the performance of the products to which they are adapted.
Because the macro kernel contains many system services, such as file system, process management, memory management, graphics card driver, etc., it needs a powerful processor for calling, so it is suitable for cell phones, computers, computers, and so on. But the micro-core is only provided as e.g. CPU management, process scheduling and other basic functions, the rest of the services are completed in the form of post-workout, so it is better suited to IOT equipment such as clocks and smart homes not so demanding.
Talk a little more,the
The operating system is the organization that arranges how the computer works. The core is the great butler of this organization. The Android Linux kernel is a great butler that takes care of everything. The great housewife personally asks, the efficiency of processing is naturally high, but inevitably it is easy to make mistakes; and Hongmeng is a butler who only understands the main things, and other things are handed over to The younger brother will do it, so the big butler will be a little easier, and the code and error speed of Hongmeng will be much less.
Regarding the concept of "distributed", Lin Wei, CMO of the smart home IoT service provider "Yaguan Technology", told 36: Distributed technology is the basis for IoT vendors to offer "Internet of Everything". From cell phones, to watches, to smart homes, cars, different devices have different computer requirements (local / cloud) and memory, while "distributed" is the operating system used to connect these devices.
It can be said whether it is micro-core or distributed, this shows that Hongmeng is a system born of IoT. Its micro-core, with low latency and low consumption, are all features of IoT devices. .
"Hong Meng's micro-core is about 90% smaller than the Android Linux kernel. The Android Linux kernel is a very heavy core. The kernel is actually from the Unix server era, there is a lot of unused content in the mobile environment. This gives the operating device This has caused unnecessary burden. "Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei's consumer software business told 36.
Due to the large number of IoT devices and the variety of them, the size, power consumption and application scenarios are different. This is why Hongmeng also has to implement a flexible deployment. When the device needs a lot of core, Hongmeng can phone to the core to charge it.According to Shao Yang, chief strategic officer of Huawei CBG, Hongmeng can load at least 10KB.
For flexible care, Hongmeng also virtualises device resources such as speakers, microphones, displays, cameras, etc., and the various devices under the same Huawei account can share these devices. For example, the clock cannot take pictures, and the cellphone can be called to take pictures.
This design has two major benefits: for the user, different devices can be terminals and mutual peripherals, you can call the best device resources. For example, in the live demonstration of the glorious smart screen conference, the DJI virtual machine became a peripheral camera of the smart screen, and the content captured by the drone was almost in real-time synchronized to the smart screen, so that the relatives in the home traveled outside. You enjoy the scenery.
For developers, an ever-developed app can be deployed simultaneously on multiple handsets, greatly enhancing development impact.
Regardless of the user or developer, Hongmeng's design is very friendly, and Huawei's huge IoT hardware allows Huawei to better capture the future on IoT.
Currently, Huawei's IoT-enabled device is "1 + 8 + X": 1 refers to the mobile phone as a primary entry point; 8 refers to the tablet, computer, TV, car, headphones, speakers, glasses, watches; X is a smart Pan-IoT device such as refrigerators, smart air systems and smart light bulbs.

2. The system is easy and the ecology difficult.
From the perspective of the number of handsets, Huawei is currently the world's three largest handset manufacturers, and its commercial entry-level mobile phone is very strong. In contrast, among other major handset devices, Xiaomi's main inbound mobile phone is now in a growing dilemma, and Apple's environment is relatively closed, making it difficult to connect a large number of third-party devices, OPPO, a life that was late in IoT, still in Hold.
On the other hand, Hongmeng is still in its infancy, the concerned environmental application is not complete, and its ability to attract other mobile phone manufacturers is naturally limited. "Hongmeng seems to be a skyscraper, but there is no furniture inside, but there are tens of thousands of applications on the Android system." Sun Yanxi, the president of the first mobile research institute, compared it to 36.
More importantly, Huawei's strong handset layout also made other manufacturers jealous. Many industrialists have expressed concern about 36 :: "To be both a terminal and a system, Huawei is a referee and player."
"After we decided to open source, we decided to be fair to all vendors and users." Zhang Ping, president of Huawei's consumer business cloud service, responded to 36 media reports and spoke about the developers' ecology. He further said that it will use The Open Source Foundation and other resources to remove market concerns, "Hong Meng should not belong to Huawei, it should belong to everyone."
At the conference, Zhang Pingan also announced that Huawei's "Yao Xing Plan" to support developers will be upgraded to $ 1 billion, including stock discounts for developers, diverting applications and innovative incentives. President Wang Chenglu also revealed that Huawei will lead the operation of China's first open source foundation.
From the high-level attitude to the real money, Huawei's establishment of Hongmeng's ecology is inevitable, but before Huawei, like Microsoft and Ali, they all attacked the establishment of the "systemic empire", but most failed. .
At Ali, in 2011, Alibaba Cloud launched YunOS and released the first YunOS-based K-Touch W700 smartphone. In February 2015, Ali invested 590 million US dollars in Meizu. The prerequisites for collaboration include: Meizu The YunOS system is equipped with your mobile phone.
But the problem with YunOS is coming soon. In 2012, Google defined YunOS as a "non-compatible version of Android", directly linking Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, OPPO and other members of the Google Open Handset Alliance to the outside of YunOS. As a member of the alliance, the brand can move forward. The new version of Android, widely recognized in foreign markets. No one is willing to sacrifice foreign markets to partner with Ali.
Developers have little incentive to migrate to YunOS. Due to YunOS's "de-carding" entry, users can phone to the service without downloading the app, which undoubtedly affects a developer's later business process. In addition Ali also requires developers to make an impact of this service as an entry point, the application must be connected to the Alibaba Cloud service.
User experience is also a big problem. In 2014, foreign media wrote the Meizu MX4 YunOS version 3.0 experience: The YunOS (Cloud Card) card service sounds great, but it is very easy to use, and the user's patience quickly runs out. Even Li Nan, Meizu's vice president, said on Weibo that "the security and efficiency of YunOS are recognized, but the design and interaction is still Flyme (stronger)!"
Although YunOS eventually subsidized with real money (10-30 yuan per machine subsidy), at the end of May 2016, it had accumulated activity of over 70 million mobile phones. But this is the same as drinking and allaying the fear that YunOS has not delivered the fate of "sticking with the brand name." Those phones equipped with the YunOS system – Haike Z1, Green Orange GO N1-Y, Bird Xiaolong XL, Philips Peter Pan, most people didn't even hear the name.
Discussing the experience of the giants being repeatedly frustrated with the self-built system, Yu Chengdong did not shy away from it. He openly told the media including 36: "They cannot do it because there is no strong end capacity. Huawei has more than 300 million a year. Taiwan, the mobile phone number has been over 200 million, we are more inclined to create an environment."
Prime Minister of Huawei Consumer Business Yu Chengdong
However, creating an environment is not only the problem of tens of millions of lines of code, but more importantly cultivating awareness of the connection between manufacturers, developers and users. Liu Xin, CEO of APICloud, told 36: "It may take 2 years to be a system, but it takes 5 years for environmental development." Does Huawei have enough time and capacity to do so?
3. The next step of Hongmeng, the second half of Huawei
As an IoT system, Hong Meng can endure the heavy hope, but as a mobile phone system it is halfway through the house – the US ban has allowed Huawei to hand over its horse head and "graft" Hong Meng to a new mission to save the mobile business.
To dispel the doubts of the industry, Wang Chenglu has repeatedly made a decision on the stability of Hongmeng's mobile phone operation. He said Huawei has overcome performance issues in microphone conditions, and compared to Android, it will not cause a decline in mobile phone performance.
But can this half-day mobile phone system really replace Android? "It is ready to replace Android" and "reached the business level", and Yu Chengdong's promises are somewhat suspect.
Yu Chengdong also acknowledged that the construction of Hongmeng will take some time. If the US disables Android, it will be effective soon. Hongmeng now invests 4,000-5,000 people. Early investment is not that big. Now it is full speed, and the system needs to be refined soon.
To further encourage developers, Yu Chengdong also pledged that the workload of developers based on software developed by other systems to migrate to Hongmeng system is very small, in just one or two days. The implication is that if software migrates from the Android system to the Hongmeng system, the developer cost is small and the threshold is very low.
From a technical perspective, Huawei has gradually replaced many parts of the Android system in the EMUI update in the past. In Huawei's latest release of EMUI 10, it has many similar benefits to Hongmeng, including device capabilities and mutual aid sharing, one-off development and multi-purpose deployment, etc. In addition to the Android kernel of Linux, it can be considered as half a bit. . If the Linux kernel is further replaced by the Hongmeng kernel, it is impossible to perform smooth migration in the domestic market.
It is not technically sufficient to meet the needs of developers. App developers need traffic and IoT vendors need sales.Michelle told 36 that if Huawei wanted to share the global retail channel resources, the IoT ecosystem would soon be established.
"IoT makers can access hundreds of thousands of meters to access Xiaomi, and Ali is also providing platform traffic and shutter support. In contrast, Huawei's ability to bring goods is more limited." Michelon said.
What about Huawei's overseas market?
After GMS Android was discontinued, Huawei's overseas market declined, mainly because Android suites could no longer be used, and these were mostly high-frequency applications for foreign users, including emails, maps, YouTube, and Google Play. . If GMS Android cannot be recovered, Huawei must find alternatives to these applications.
To this end, Huawei has provided some solutions at the developer conference. For the first time, Huawei has released the HMS ecosystem to the world, providing developers with features and service support, including Huawei positioning, maps and unified scan code. But this can only count as appropriate and appropriate, and most users accustomed to Google applications are very difficult to migrate. There is no way to replace YouTube or Google Play with the existing solution.
In addition, Gartner, senior research director Lu Junkuan also pointed out that Facebook, Google and other APP giants, cannot operate in Hongmeng is also a big problem.
Overall, if GMS Android fails, Huawei's Hongmeng system can support it, but for now, it's not a good choice. Adding a certain cost to the developer, although this cost is not large. Therefore, even with the Hongmeng system, Huawei executives have repeatedly emphasized that Android is still the first choice.
Speaking about consumer confidence in foreign markets, Yu Chengdong is also very optimistic: "US consumers believe that Huawei mobile phones cannot be used, and they have changed bricks, but after discovering that no problem, this confidence will be restored. "
For Huawei, the difficult performance and sales indicators are improving, but Hongmeng Ecology's openness and Huawei's betting on the next 5-10 years of IoT has become another big mountain ahead of it. The Huawei Developers Conference coincides with Yu Chengdong's 50th birthday, and he was there that night.the
Five circles of "gratitude" were sent from the circle of their friends: grateful to parents, teachers, classmates, companies and colleagues, and said they would like the opportunity, continue to struggle and open a new journey in the second half of life. Call this an "unforgettable day."
