NASA will name the land of the Bennu asteroids with mythical birds – Science Quest – cnBeta.COM

According to reports from the foreign media, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Group for the Designation of Planets (WGPSN) and NASA have decided to name the mythical birds and bird-like creatures NASA OSRIS-REx surrounds on the various lands of the flying asteroid Bennu.

Although a bit boring, one of the tasks needed to explore is to name the things that have already been discovered. To prevent duplication and embarrassment of false naming, IAU is responsible for checking and approving the naming standards found during space exploration.

Taking OSIRIS-REx as an example, the task is currently designing a 492-meter asteroid map to find a place to collect 60 grams of samples back to Earth. This includes not only craters, mountains or ridges, trenches, but also a new type of rock and rock called sax.

NASA said the names of these birds will begin to be released in a few weeks.

It is reported that the OSIRIS-REx mission is the first US attempt to retrieve asteroid samples back to Earth. The probe was launched on September 8, 2016 at the Cape Canaveral Space Launch Site in Cape Florida, United States. The United Launch Alliance Atlas V 411 rocket has been launched. It arrived in Bennu on December 3, 2018 and entered the asteroid orbit 28 days later. . By mid-2020, it will collect samples of Bennu and return to Earth in September 2023.
