Scientists reveal the role of meteorites in the prosperity of life on the planet



Chemicals buried in rocks early in our planet's history provide further evidence that "meteoric strikes" have contributed to the emergence of life on Earth, experts say.

The researchers studied isotopes of selenium, the atoms of an element that have the same number of protons and electrons, but with different numbers of neutrons. Identical isotopic traces were found in the studied rocks and certain types of meteorites.

This suggests that selenium, as well as large quantities of water and other building life, originated outside our world.

Researchers go even further, proposing Panspermia, which suggests that life itself spreads throughout the universe as "bacteria" in comets or meteorites.

Researchers from the Geochemistry Group at the University of Tübingen in Germany have used a new technique to detect isotopes of selenium.

The research team took samples of layered rocks that had been transported to the surface by tectonic operations, and have remained the same since the earth's formation. They measured the effect of selenium isotopes in these rocks, and found that they were compatible with meteorites from the edge of the solar system.

Meteorite volatiles have also contributed to the formation of the Earth's protective atmosphere. The concentration of selenium in high-temperature rocks – like those formed in the mantle – was shown to be very low.

The team's new technology allows the measurement of selenium isotopes in these high-temperature rocks.

The full results of the study were published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
