This summer, the Cancer League once again warns of the dangers of the sun, recalls that sun protection is paramount, regardless of skin type or level of tan, and compiles the many received insights that remain anchored in people's heads. Here are seven: So, true or false?

This summer, in your beach bag, remember to slip on your hat, your t-shirt, your pair of glasses and, of course, your sunscreen.

Despite the prevention messages that have been circulating for many years, it is still not a reflection of many French people: 24% of them – 34% men and 15% women – said in May 2019 Do not use sun protection when exposed, according to a YouGov survey (1).

In a statement released in late July, the Cancer League once again warns of the dangers of the sun, remembers that sun protection is paramount, regardless of skin type or level of tan, and compiles the many insights received that remain anchored in people's heads. Here are seven: So, true or false?

1 / Sunsets are the first step in tanning

FALSE : "In any case a sunburn is already a skin lesion. The sunburn lightweight In addition to pain, they cause thickening of the skin. If sunburn is more important (burns, blisters), skin bead and leaves room for a new, more fragile fabric that can burn in turn … It's a vicious circle! "

2 / Under an umbrella, I can't sunbathe

FALSE: "At the beach, you are not completely sheltered under an umbrella. It does not stop the sun reflecting on the sand. So no sunscreen, glasses and sun protection. Clouds, wind and bathing have a deceptive effect (…) In fact, even the clouds filter only a small part of the ultraviolet rays, and if the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are largely responsible for the harmful effects of the sun, also protect against UVA, mutagenesis recognized ".

And Vitamin D?

Be careful, it is not a question of saying that the sun is the absolute evil. We need it for morale and it provides us with Vitamin D, but let's deal with it reasonably.

To obtain sufficient stimulation of vitamin D synthesis, it is sufficient for the skin of the face, arms and hands (approximately 25% of the body) to be exposed to sunlight twice 15 to 30 minutes per week. Vitamin D is therefore not an excuse for poor sun protection.

If you are afraid of missing out, rather than exposing yourself dangerously, it is best to go elsewhere, for example, in animal foods such as meat or dairy products. They are also found in fatty fish such as eel, salmon and mackerel, or in vitamin D-rich margarines.

3 / Everyone can tan, just get exposed often

FALSE : "Some people, like red people, make little or no brown pigments that allow tanning. If you have very clear skin, white (albino) or red hair, freckles that appear very quickly in case of Exposure (phototype 1), or if you have very light skin, which may become blond, light blonde or brown hair, freckles that appear in the sun (phototype 2), do not try to tan. "

4 / One cannot tan with an index 50

FALSE: "No sunscreen is 100% light-reflective. The full screen term has been banned in Europe for fifteen years. In addition, if you have a skin that is tanned, it does not mean that you do not 'Do not catch sunburns. For if, for skin subjects, sunburns do not occur as quickly, they still exist … and the skin is damaged. "

5 / Tanning under a lamp is safe

FALSE: "Tanning under a UVA lamp or bench is a high risk practice: 50 to 70% of skin cancers are directly linked to overexposure to UVA and UVB."

6 / The sun favors the treatment of certain diseases

TRUE and FALSE: "This is true for rickets (but 10 minutes of exposure a day is enough), psoriasis (in combination with other treatments) and eczema. However, it is not true for acne or joint pain. (it is better to treat the cause), even if the heat does good ".

7 / No need to regularly monitor her beauty beads

FALSE: "The term of beauty grain refers to several types of pigmented lesions of the skin: warts, papillomas, naevus … Only lesions containing cells that make melanin pigment, called melanocytic naevus, may be the cause of skin cancers. But in doubt, one beauty grain who changes their appearance, bleeds, spreads, or changes in color, should consult their doctor or dermatologist. "

Skin cancers: skin carcinomas and melanomas

Skin carcinomas are the most common skin cancers (80% of cases), but also the most curable of skin cancers. They develop on the skin in places exposed to the sun, most often after 60 years.

More rare (about 1% of skin cancers) than carcinomas, however, melanoma cases are increasing.

Skin melanoma has seen its number of new cases tripling between 1980 and 2005. And it continues to grow at an average of +3.4% per year over the recent period 2010-2018.

Surgery remains the main weapon for treating early-onset melanoma. At an advanced stage, treatment with immunotherapy, targeted treatment and / or chemotherapy may be necessary.

In total, 80,000 new carcinomas and 11,200 new melanoma cases are diagnosed each year in France.

(1) The survey was conducted on 1013 persons representing the French national population aged 18 years and over. The survey was conducted online, on the YouGov France owner panel.
