Measles epidemic in Israel reaches 1,401 – precise vaccinations

On November 6, 2018, the Ministry of Health of the State of Israel announced that 735 cases of measles had been confirmed in October.

Also, the total number of measles cases confirmed by the Ministry of Health for 2018 is 1,401.

Moreover, 838 cases of measles were reported in Jerusalem in 2018.

At a meeting held on November 6, Ms. Ilana Cohen, Chairman of the Israel Sisters Association and Mr. Avi Nissenkorn, Chairman of the Histadrut, stated that "all nurses in all health and family health centers will continue to vaccinate against measles, including the activity required to diagnose And prevent the spread of the disease. "

Moreover, Deputy Health Minister Rabbi Yaakov Litzman added that "the ministry has allocated all the financial resources necessary to prevent the continued spread of the disease."

Specifically, the Ministry of Health decided on the following measures:

  • To expand the immunization operation to prevent measles in Jerusalem, which also includes the maintenance of dairy ranching treatments in open families in the evenings.
  • The campaign is coordinated with the health funds and municipal bodies. So far, the percentage of vaccinations in pockets without their disease has increased from 55% to more than 80%.
  • A mobile unit designed to vaccinate communities. The mobile unit patrols the target neighborhoods in order to vaccinate the site.
  • Coordinate with relevant factors in communities with relatively low coverage rates for vaccines.
  • Hiring new nurses and adding new nurse jobs in the Jerusalem district and assisting nurses with additional personnel and health students.
  • Restricting the entry of uninhibited visitors to sensitive departments in hospitals, such as the Department of Neonatal, Intensive Care, oncology and oncology oncology.
  • Given the fact that restricting access to schools for people who are not vaccinated can endanger the public.
  • Because of the limited efficacy of the vaccine at a young age and the need to repeat the vaccine at 12 months, it was decided to maintain the age of the first vaccine as it is, except for specific outbreak centers that will be under the sole discretion of the district doctor of the Ministry of Health.

In the United States, measles outbreaks were reported in Brooklyn and Rockland County in New York.

The New York Department of Health reported that the first cases of measles reported in New York were purchased by children on their last visit to Israel.

As of 6 October 2018, 142 cases of measles have been approved in 25 countries and in the District of Columbia.

Most people who received measles during 2018 were unvaccinated, the CDC said.

"Measles can cause serious complications such as brain damage and death. This virus is very contagious, it spreads in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes," said Natasha Gildersleeve, PharmD, clinical pharmacist, MTM and vaccine specialist for the grocery store Brookshire.

"The measles-measles vaccine (MMR) is the best defense against measles as it provides ongoing immunity against all strains of measles," Gildersleeve said.

In the United States, there are two approved measles vaccines.

In addition, international travelers can apply for an MMR vaccination at a local pharmacy at Vax-Before-Travel.
