Most predators of sexual crimes against children are known to victims: the police

Shah Alam: Statistics by police Selangor revealed that 75.7% of cases of sexual crimes against children that have been reported Selangor since January this year were carried out by people known to victims.

The head of the Criminal Investigation Department of AC Saladin, AC Fadzil Ahmat, said that the sexual predators known to the victims were the father or stepfather, grandfather, elder brother, husband or babysitter, neighbor and friend of the mother.

He noted that the data also showed an increase in the number of cases, to 333 cases from 287 cases in the same period last year.

Of the 333 cases reported so far this year, he said, 201 cases of children under the age of 18 as victims were prosecuted, with 82 cases given "no further action" (NFA) and 51 others still pending.

"We expect the number to grow even more with the upcoming school holiday, so we hope for parents' cooperation to keep track of children's movements and activities, especially when using mobile phones and access to social media," CID Media Talk said here today.

Among the contributing factors to sexual crimes against children were the effects of social media, the development of technology, the non-gradual attitude of parents to their children's activities and movements, curiosity and group influence.

He said victims of sexual offenses, or witnesses, could contact the police station nearest them to report sexual crimes or help.

"In this regard, the role of teachers in schools is very important to identify changes in their students, such as being depressed or quiet, teachers must submit a police report if they suspect that their students are victims of sexual crime."

To facilitate the recording of statements by victims of a child's sexual crime, he said, the police established the Child Interview Center (CIC) in all units and they were staffed by trained officers who would record statements of victims under the age of 16. – Bernma
