A member of Huawei 20 Pro is a technical marvel

Judging by the new Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro as Olympic figure skaters, they undoubtedly earn 10s across the board for technical merit. The reason is that even though they do not have a built-in stylus, the new HAVAWAY flagship phone offers almost every other feature you can want, and I do not mean just the easy shit.

We're talking about three-dimensional fullness, a fingerprint sensor built into the screen, three cameras on the back (including one with 3x zoom on the Mate 20 Pro), and even a wireless back charging that can be used on top of your other gadgets. And with even more striking color options, cute chassis, and leading class specifications, the Mate 20 also earns high scores for art and performance.

Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro

What is?

Huawei's latest pair of flagship phones

price

About $ 1099 for Mate 20, or around $ 1599 for the Mate 20 Pro

same as

Great color options, great battery life, three-dimensional back cameras, more features than any other phone in the market

not like

Expensive, no official American model, Mate 20 Pro does not have a headset jack.

I mean, just look at them. Especially when wearing the signature twilight colors of Huawei, it is not difficult to imagine the Mate 20 out on ice pulling the dual axel double FICO loops. Huawei even pays attention to the small details both inside and out when it comes to things like the colored phone activation buttons, or any improvements in Huawei's EMUI 9 skin for Android.

Unlike the Galaxy Note 9, EMUI is based on the latest version of Android 9 pie and includes tweaks to help cut bloat menu, useful options like built-in dark theme, multiple ways to customize your user interface.

However, it is a little discouraging to see applications like Booking.com and eBay pre-installed out of the box, especially on phones that start at around $ 1099. I noticed that when trying to search for key features like Huawei's performance mode, I could not find it using the search bar settings menu. So despite Huawei's efforts to optimize the endless possibilities on the phone and make things easier to find, there is still room sharpening left in Huawei's routine.

As for the different Mate 20 models, the Mate 20 Pro is more luxurious than the two. Although it offers a slightly smaller screen 6.39 inches (compared to 6.5 inches for the Standard Mate 20), the panel is OLED rather than a slightly higher resolution LCD, resulting in sharper images and more vivid images. In a vacuum, both screens look good, but side by side, the difference is obvious.

But more importantly, the Mate 20 Pro is one loaded with tech. It has more RAM, a fingerprint reader on the screen that feels even more blurry than what you get on OnePlus 6T, and a handy slot that includes an infrared 3D dot projector that scans your face the same way as Apple's face recognition. For people concerned about security, this is a significant upgrade over a simpler 2D facial recognition found in almost any other Android phone.

And it's not all brilliant shiny flash twinkles or that Snap Mate 20 also sports the IP68 Water Resistance dust rating and Huawei's new new Huawei 980 processor and even built-in IR blasters for people who like to be able to use their phone as a remote TV. This is the second time Huawei has pulled this exercise, but I still find it annoying that only the Standard Mate 20 offers a headphone jack.

Both the Mate 20s also offer exceptional endurance, with the standard model advertising battery life of 15 hours and 15 minutes on our test run-down. This is a better hour than the Galaxy Note 9 (14:11). And while his more expensive brother was not quite that good, thanks to an even larger 4200mAh battery, the Mate 20 Pro has enough juice to offset its higher res screen and other hungry power components still pump out an excellent time of 14:06.

In normal use, this means the two phones will almost always have an excess of energy, so Huawei figured out a way to make them useful reserves by including wireless charging back too. And while finding the sweet spot charging other devices like wireless headsets or even other phones can be a bit phoenix, this feature is something I would love to see on future phones.

it's so easy. Just go to the battery settings, hit the switch for reverse charging, and spit them to a QI compliant device on the back of the Mate 20. No cables needed.

But the features and highlights in Huawei's long program are its triple camera behind. For this test, I've spent most of my time using Mate 20 Pro, as Standard Mate 20 features almost the same setting and picture quality similar to what you get from the Huawei Pro20 Pro released earlier this year.

But the Mate 20 Pro steps things up with a new wide angle lens for each large, open landscape shooting needs, the same 40 megapixel primary camera as before, and a new 8 megapixel camera with 3x zoom.

Just going by image quality alone, the Mate 20 Pro is almost certainly the 3rd pixel of the biggest photo rivalry. But when you add the capabilities of these additional lenses and sensors onto all the tricks of Huawei's software, Mate 20 Pro has the largest and most powerful image toolkit of any phone on the market.

The number of shooting modes is shocking, with Huawei offering options for things like light drawing, timelapse, document scanning, and more. There is even an underwater mode designed for use with a special waterproof case so you can take photos while swimming. And if it was not for Google recently released night mode, night mode Huawei would boast the most impressive light capabilities on the market.

When it comes to Mate's 20x 3x zoom load though, I discovered something strange. According to this specification, the zoom lens includes an 8-megapixel sensor, but when you press the 3x button in the camera application and take a picture, the resolution of the image is 3648×2736, which is actually 10 megapixels, and the same size as the pictures you get from the main camera of the phone.

It makes you wonder how much data the 20x 3x Mate lens of Pro is actually collecting, and how much phone information gets from the other lenses on the back. What is even stranger is that the wide angle lens does not seem to suffer from it, as the images captured by it are 5120×3840, which conforms to its listed 20-MP specification.

It is possible that a lot of heavy lifting is shared between the main 40MP camera and the 8MP zoom sensor, and that Huawei uses some kind of computational photography to hit the 3x zoom, but at this point, it's pretty safe to say that the 20 Zoom Zoom Pro is not the only optical in nature. I came to Huawei for more information on the Mate 20 Pro zoom camera, and update the review if I hear back.

But perhaps the biggest problem with Mate 20's photo taking when Huawei's AI image tuning gets too aggressive. It is quite distracting enough when you see colors pop in and out as the learning algorithm of the Huawei machine to recognize things like food or flowers, but by injection I took some apples, AI of Huawei AI made them look next to a radioactive shot shot captured by 3 pixel.

Fortunately, you can disable these improvements if things look junk, or disable the AI unit completely by replacing the setup menus. I would not do that, though, when it works, the images were hacked by Mate 20 Pro to defy their smartphone origin. It is good.

Really, after checking the Mate 20 and the Mate 20, that good seeps into both instruments. Even with all of their innovative technology, you will not encounter bugs or errors that you can expect from this cutting edge. The Mate 20's biggest drawback is the price, which starts at around $ 1,099 for the standard version, and costs up to $ 1,599 for the Mate 20 Pro.
