Study: 11 million children will die of pneumonia by 2030

11 million children under the age of five will die of pneumonia by 2030, according to a study.

More than 880,000 children – most of them under the age of two – died of pneumonia only in 2016.

Based on forecasts of today's trends, more than 10.8 million children under the age of five will die from the disease over the next 12 years. The study was conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, and the Red Barna Relief Organization.

It is usually only the elderly population in developed countries affected by the disease. In more developed countries, most children are affected. Among the affected countries are Nigeria and India, where 1.7 million children will die from the disease, according to the study. 700,000 children will die in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the study.

The researchers also concluded that 4.1 million children can be saved if the vaccine program is increased and more people are given access to antibiotics.
