The Public Health Authority of England (PHE) no longer told of the British death, but the seriousness of the situation seemed to have been recognized too late. Rabies is transmitted to humans by animals such as cats or dogs. The disease is caused by viruses found in the saliva of animals – such as contact with mucous membranes or bite. Pathogens then enter the connective tissue and muscle cells on the wound, multiply there and then transfer through nerve cells into the brain into the heart.
