Federal authorities say the rapper called Takashi 6ix9ine is in custody and is awaiting a court appearance in Manhattan.
The Brooklyn-based rapper, whose legal name is Daniel Hernandez, is among four people arrested for blackmail and weapons.
The prosecutors did not immediately explain the allegations against the rapper.
The authorities also arrested three of Hernandez's former associates.
A lawyer who previously represented Hernandez did not immediately respond to an email seeking a Monday response.
6ix9ine was among the most controversial names in hip-hop in recent months. His debut album, Day69, is among the most downloaded records on iTunes.
But he had some runs with law enforcement. He recently pleaded guilty to felonious behavior in the Brooklyn criminal court about the station in May.
